Independence Day Parade Held with President Shahabuddin as Chief Guest

Bangladesh celebrated its 56th Independence and National Day on 26 March with a grand parade at the National Parade Ground.

It marked the 56th Independence and National Day. President Shahabuddin rode an open jeep with Major General SM Asadul Haque, the parade commander. The general is GOC of the 9th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Savar.

Many groups joined the parade. They included contingents from Muktijuddha Sangsad, Bangladesh Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Coast Guard, Ansar and VDP, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Bangladesh National Cadet Corps (BNCC), Bangladesh Jail, and combined female contingents. President Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman saw special events too.

These were a flag-bearing skydive, weapon displays from army regiments, and exciting fly-pasts with aerobatics. Prime Minister’s daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, also attended the parade and displays. Before leaving, the President and Prime Minister shook hands and chatted with the contingent commanders.

Every year on March 26, we remember history’s saddest time. It marks the start of a nine-month bloody struggle from the night of March 25, 1971. That led to independence on December 16, 1971, after many lives were lost.
