ED Raids Kolkata Rice Trader Over Alleged Hawala Transactions

Kolkata, November 4, 2026: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday conducted searches at the residence and office of a rice trader in Kamalgazi, under the Narendrapur police station limits, over allegations of money laundering through hawala transactions. The searches are reportedly linked to an ongoing investigation into a financial fraud case originating in Guwahati.
The businessman, identified as Shyamal Byapari, allegedly used his rice trading business as a front to facilitate the movement of money generated through cyber fraud. According to reports citing ED sources, investigators suspect that crores of rupees were transferred through hawala channels under the cover of legitimate business transactions.
An ED team arrived at Byapari’s residence in Kamalgazi early Wednesday morning before proceeding to his office. Investigators are examining financial records and other documents to trace the suspected flow of funds and establish the extent of his alleged involvement in the transactions.
The investigation reportedly began following allegations of financial fraud and the subsequent movement of illicit funds through informal money transfer networks. The agency is now examining whether the rice trading business was used to conceal the source and movement of the money.
The searches are part of the ED’s wider investigation into suspected financial irregularities linked to the Guwahati case. Further details regarding the findings of the raids and the possible involvement of other individuals are awaited.
The case once again draws attention to the alleged use of legitimate businesses as channels for moving illicit funds. Investigators will now seek to establish the money trail, identify the beneficiaries and determine whether the suspected hawala network extends beyond the businessman under investigation.
