Bengal Horror: Man Found With Wife’s Severed Head at Temple, Blames Job Loss

Kolkata, November 4, 2026: In a horrifying incident in West Bengal’s South Dinajpur district, a 46-year-old man was arrested after allegedly murdering his wife and sitting inside a temple with her severed head on his lap. The incident took place in Gangarampur town’s Narayanpur area, municipal ward number 4, on Wednesday morning.
The accused has been identified as Rintu Ghosh, also reported as Rintu Sarkar, a former conductor with the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC). The victim, identified as Seema Ghosh Sarkar, was reportedly 35–42 years old, with news reports differing on her age.
According to preliminary police findings and accounts from local residents, the incident followed a quarrel between the couple in the early hours of Wednesday. The accused allegedly murdered his wife at their residence before taking her severed head to a temple nearby. Residents who spotted him alerted the police after witnessing the disturbing scene.
A police team from Gangarampur police station reached the location and arrested the accused. The victim’s body was recovered and sent for a post-mortem examination. A sharp weapon, reportedly a dao, was also recovered from the scene. The couple had been married for approximately 15 years and had two minor sons.
While being taken to the police station, Rintu reportedly told local media, “I became a psycho after they sacked me.” He claimed that he had lost his job as a bus conductor around three years ago on disciplinary grounds. Following his dismissal, he reportedly earned a living by selling flowers, puffed rice and jaggery.
The circumstances surrounding his employment history have also emerged as part of the investigation. A district police officer said preliminary information suggested that the accused had become increasingly irritable and short-tempered after losing his job. Neighbours also claimed that he had previously been arrested twice following disputes with local residents. Police said these accounts were being verified.
There are also differing accounts of the couple’s relationship. While some neighbours alleged frequent domestic disputes, the victim’s brother reportedly said he was unaware of any serious marital discord. Police are examining these accounts to establish what led to the killing. Investigators are also seeking medical advice to assess the accused’s mental condition, given his statements following the arrest.
With two young children now left without their mother and their father in police custody, the investigation has turned towards establishing the events that preceded the killing. Police are yet to determine the precise circumstances and motive behind the crime, and the accused’s claims about his job loss remain part of the statements being examined.
Beyond the brutality of the crime itself, what makes this case particularly horrific is the series of unanswered questions surrounding it. How does personal frustration turn into violence of such unimaginable proportions? Can the loss of a livelihood, domestic discord and years of accumulated resentment become warning signs that go unnoticed until it is too late? While none of these circumstances can ever justify taking another person’s life, they demand a closer examination of the social and personal crises that often remain hidden behind closed doors.
Perhaps the more uncomfortable question is whether we, as a society, have become too accustomed to hearing about such horrors only after they have happened. We speak of mental health, unemployment, domestic violence and social isolation, but how seriously do we address them before they reach a breaking point? And what happens to the families, particularly children, who are left to live with the lifelong trauma of violence they neither caused nor understood?
A society cannot measure its progress merely through economic growth or development; it must also be judged by how it protects human lives, human dignity, recognises distress and prevents violence. The question that lingers is not simply what drove one man to commit such an appalling act, but how many warning signs can go unnoticed before another tragedy unfolds.
