Malda Murder: Hacked, Shot Dead on Dashami!

MALDA, October 22: A brutal murder in West Bengal’s Malda district has triggered fresh concerns over political violence and public safety. Samir Ghosh, a BJP supporter, was allegedly hacked with sharp weapons and shot twice in the Ramkeli area under English Bazar police station on Wednesday evening, October 21. The killing was followed by clashes between two groups, leaving at least six people injured. A large police contingent was deployed to control the situation.

According to reports, the attackers allegedly entered Ghosh’s residence while he was alone, assaulted him with sharp weapons and then fired two rounds at close range. The exact sequence of events and the motive behind the killing remain under investigation.

Ghosh’s family has alleged that he had faced threats linked to a local dispute and his political association. They have accused individuals allegedly associated with the Trinamool Congress of involvement in the murder. The allegations remain unverified, and local Trinamool Congress leaders have denied the accusations. Counter-allegations have also emerged amid the escalating tensions.

Police have reportedly detained one person for questioning, although reports differ on whether any formal arrests have been made. Investigators are working to identify the attackers, establish the motive and determine whether the murder was politically motivated. Police have said the situation is under control, with additional personnel deployed to prevent further violence.

The incident has left a family grieving and several others injured during the clashes that followed. While political allegations dominate the public debate, the immediate human cost cannot be overlooked. Ghosh’s family is left seeking answers, injured residents are undergoing treatment, and people in the neighbourhood have been confronted with violence during what should have been a period of celebration.

The timing of the murder, on Dashami evening, makes the incident particularly disturbing. Durga Puja is traditionally a time of community gatherings and celebration, yet the festivities have been overshadowed by a killing and subsequent unrest. The incident raises questions about whether earlier threats were reported, whether preventive action was possible and how quickly the authorities responded to the violence.

Who carried out the attack, and why? Were there warning signs that could have helped prevent the murder? What triggered the clashes that left six people injured? These questions require answers based on evidence rather than political accusations.

Political violence has consequences far beyond its immediate victims. It creates fear among residents, places families at risk and deepens divisions within communities. Regardless of political affiliation, those responsible must be identified and held accountable if the evidence establishes their guilt.

As the investigation continues, the priority must be to establish the facts, protect residents and ensure justice for the victim. For Ghosh’s family, no investigation can undo the loss. But a transparent probe and accountability through due process remain essential to ensuring that the violence does not become another unresolved chapter in West Bengal’s political landscape.
