Bangladesh Shocked as Class-10 Student Dies by Suicide, Leaving Note Questioning Exam-Driven Pressure

The academic stress of students has been highlighted by a tragic event that took place in Thakurgaon when a 10 th -grade girl, Humaira Akter Mim, committed suicide after leaving a heartrending note, which cast doubt on her presence outside of school results. The incident has elicited shockwaves across the community and nation, and it demonstrated a widespread and increasingly large-scale crisis of mental health of young learners in Bangladesh.

A Life Determined by Expectation

Mim is a student who has recently obtained the third position in her class but was reported to be suffering under the consistent pressure of education, and among the coaching classes and online lessons. Parental and social pressure, the continuous desire to achieve good outcomes seems to have placed an intolerable burden on her mind. Studies have also shown that academic pressure contributes greatly to suicides among students in the area with comparison by teachers and parents, only increasing the feeling of ineptitude and depression.

The Last, Heart-wrenching Message

The incident took place on a Friday night after a quarrel with her father over a smartphone. Mim in her turn got overwhelmed and locked herself in her room and hanged herself. A note she left next to her body gave a heartbreaking insight into her inner world: Was I born just to give results? This is my final result, I am giving it now. This is a scathing indictment of a system of education that may unwillingly focus on the scores at the expense of the well-being of a child something also highlighted by professionals who cite the necessity of more mental health services in schools.

A Call for Change

The police are investigating the incident and the body under examination is ready to undergo autopsy. This is a tragedy that contributes to an alarming situation in Bangladesh, where suicides among students have been on the increase, particularly among the female teens. Advocates of child rights and mental health professionals insist a systemic change, that is, education institutions are supposed to offer psychosocial support and incorporate mental health education in the school curriculum to prepare students to deal with academic and peer pressure better. Hopefully, Mim did not say such heartbreaking words in vain, but it will be the first step to creating a kinder and more helpful atmosphere towards all students.
