PM Modi Inaugurates SEMICON India 2026, Says India Becoming Trusted Hub for Chips

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi.

The three-day conference and exhibition will run from September 17 to 19. The theme for this year is “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem”.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi said India’s economy is growing fast and global trust in India is also growing. He said despite global challenges, India recorded 7.8% GDP growth in the last quarter. He added that a Japanese credit rating agency has also upgraded India’s sovereign rating.

The Prime Minister said India’s semiconductor ecosystem is growing rapidly and creating new opportunities for innovation and investment.

Key announcements from PM Modi:

– Chips made in India are now available in India and across the world.

– Commercial production has started at two new semiconductor plants in Mohali and Surat. Three plants approved under Semicon 1.0 are already in production.

– The government has launched Semiconductor Mission 2.0. Its budget has been increased from $8 billion to $13.5 billion. So far, 12 chip-making projects have been approved.

PM Modi also said India successfully hosted the BRICS Summit in New Delhi recently, where the New Delhi Declaration was adopted by all member countries. He said this shows the world’s trust in India.

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that India wanted to build a chip industry for decades, but it became possible only under PM Modi’s leadership. He said Semicon 2.0 will focus on six pillars – chip design, machines and materials, memory, silicon fabrication, compound fabrication and R&D. The government aims to support 200 startups to design chips in India.

SEMICON India 2026 is jointly organised by India Semiconductor Mission, Ministry of Electronics and IT, and global body SEMI.

– Over 600 exhibitors, including 300 international companies, are participating.

– Delegations from more than 50 countries have come.

– There are 6 country pavilions – Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden.

– There are 12 State Government pavilions and a dedicated Startup Pavilion with 40 startups.

The event will focus on collaboration, investment and skill development to make India a global leader in semiconductors.
