Bangladesh Again Sees Targeted Killings of Hindus: Crimes Against the Hindu Minority Are Increasing—Is Being Hindu as a Religious Minority a Crime?

Mymensingh, Bangladesh: On the night of December 18, 2025, a garment factory worker was beaten and set on fire by an angry mob. The incident took place around 9.00 pm in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. This incident happened after the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a student leader in Bangladesh.

On the night of December 18, 2025, this laborer, whose name is known as Dipu Chandra Das, was taken to the footpath by an angry mob. He was then beaten and murdered. Then, in order to finish what was left of his life, the mob tied him to a tree and set him on fire while he was still alive. The angry mob then shouted slogans such as “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) and “Nara-e-Taqbeer, Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest). This was not the end, the moment of this brutal and hellish incident was being photographed, video recorded on many mobile phones at that time. The pictures and videos went viral on social media.

Mob Killing Viral Picture of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh

The incident took place at a time when Bangladesh is going through a turbulent time. The protesting mob reportedly attacked the offices of various news outlets. The victim was identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a 30-year-old Hindu male. He worked at the Pioneer Knit Composite Factory in Bangladesh. This Dipu Chandra Das was a resident of Dubaliya Para and used to live as a tenant. The attackers are said to be local residents and colleagues of Dipu Chandra Das. How accurate these figures are is still being investigated.

But what’s the reason for that?

It is known that there was an event at the factory: World Arabic Language Day. At this event, Dipu made some insulting remarks about Chandra Das or Islam. That’s where this incident took place. The body was kept on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway after being tied to a tree and set on fire. The burning body of Dipu Chandra Das was found on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. Traffic on the road was suspended. According to today’s Tariq, December 19, 2025, this area is still disturbed. Police sent the body to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. Officers in the government and the police are looking for the people of Dipu Chandra Das’s house so that they can file a legal case. However, the interim Muhammad Yunus government has strongly condemned the brutal incident and claimed that the culprits will be dealt with sternly. However, no case has been filed against the accused as of yet. Human rights organizations, such as the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), United Nations (UN) representatives and bodies are very concerned about the safety of religious minorities in Bangladesh. The brutal murder of Dipu Chandra Das showed three aspects of conflict in the society:

  1. Humanity vs Inhumanity
  2. Religion vs religion

and

  1. Justice vs injustice

There was no preliminary inquiry against or in favour of Dipu Chandra Das. The government has failed to maintain law and order. Without walking in the path of law, without the opinion of law, the people of Mymensingh took the law into their own hands and punished him. It seems that justice versus injustice has come to the forefront. Who knows, wasn’t he brutally killed because he emerged as a Hindu and participated in the World Arabic Language Day?
