Protesters who went to Dhanmondi 32 with excavators dispersed

The army and police have dispersed protesters who were using two excavators to demolish Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house on Dhanmondi Road 32 in the capital.

Traffic on the road from New Market to Mirpur was stopped due to this incident.

Two excavators were seen on Mirpur Road in front of Dhanmondi No. 32 around noon today, Monday.

Students of Dhaka College reached Dhanmondi 32 on Monday morning (17 November), bringing two bulldozers with them as they began their march from the college’s main gate.

Earlier, an official of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Dhanmondi division told Prothom Alo that he had heard excavators were being brought toward Dhanmondi 32.

When asked about the matter, Additional Deputy Commissioner of DMP’s Dhanmondi division, Zisanul Haque, told news agency, “We will in no way allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.”

Earlier, in February, more than half of the house at 32 Dhanmondi, belonging to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was demolished.

On 5 August 2024, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government during the July mass uprising, the house at 32 Dhanmondi had been set on fire and burned down.

Today, the verdict is being delivered in the case filed against Sheikh Hasina over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.

The proceedings for announcing the verdict are being broadcast live from the courtroom of International Crimes Tribunal-1. This is the first case related to killings and other crimes against humanity during the mass uprising to reach a verdict today.
