Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif Calls Trump “Man of Peace” at UNGA, Nominates Him for Nobel

New York, United States: At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised former US President Donald Trump, crediting him with brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan after military action earlier this year in May. Sharif went further, nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, calling him “a man of peace.”

Sharif’s Remarks

In his 25-minute speech, Sharif said Pakistan, “though in a position of strength,” agreed to a ceasefire facilitated by Trump’s “bold and vigorous leadership.”

He emphasized, “This is the least we can do for his love of peace truly, he is a man of peace.”

Sharif also thanked China, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Azerbaijan, Iran, the UAE, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres for their diplomatic support during Pakistan’s clashes with India.

India’s Stand

While Trump and Sharif highlighted the US role in easing tensions, India has consistently denied any foreign involvement in its military operation “Operation Sindoor”, conducted in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir.

Strategic Context

Earlier in the week, Sharif and Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir met Trump at the Oval Office. The US has been seeking closer engagement with Pakistan, particularly in light of renewed interest in Afghanistan and the strategic importance of Bagram Air Base near Kabul.
