A night meant for political satire and press celebrations in Washington turned into panic and chaos after gunfire erupted at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, with officials later confirming that President Donald Trump was likely the intended target.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, early investigations suggest the suspect was “likely targeting folks that work in the administration, likely including the president” . He added that the attacker appeared to have travelled across multiple cities before reaching Washington, raising concerns about pre-planned intent.

The incident unfolded at around 8:35 p.m. local time at the Washington Hilton, where more than 2,000 guests, including senior government officials and journalists, were gathered. A Secret Service checkpoint outside the ballroom was breached, and the suspect allegedly opened fire with a shotgun, injuring a federal security officer before being quickly subdued.

President Trump was evacuated along with First Lady Melania Trump. Speaking after the incident, Trump said he believed he was the target and described the situation as controlled quickly by security forces. He also confirmed that the injured Secret Service agent was protected by a bulletproof vest and was in “good shape” after being released from hospital .

Authorities identified the suspect as a California resident in his early 30s. Officials said he was carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, handgun, and knives, and may have checked into the hotel before the event. Investigators are still working to determine his motive, though early findings suggest he may have acted alone.

Security footage reportedly shows chaos inside the ballroom as the sound of gunfire triggered panic, with guests shouting “Get down!” while security teams rushed in and formed protective barriers around officials. Some attendees were evacuated, while others were asked to shelter under tables as armed officers secured the area.

The incident has triggered serious concerns about security at high-profile political events. Officials are now reviewing how the attacker was able to bring weapons into a heavily guarded venue and pass through multiple checkpoints.

World leaders quickly reacted to the incident. Several condemned the attack and expressed relief that Trump and other officials were safe, calling it an assault on democratic institutions and press freedom.

As investigations continue, the suspect is expected to face federal charges, including attempted murder of a federal officer and firearms offences, with authorities not ruling out additional charges depending on motive.

For what is usually a light-hearted Washington tradition, this year’s dinner has instead become one of the most serious security scares in recent U.S. political memory.

Eyewitnesses describe sudden panic as the ballroom shifted from celebration to evacuation

Guests at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner said the atmosphere inside the Washington Hilton changed within seconds as the evening moved from a formal gathering to an emergency evacuation, following security alerts linked to gunfire outside the venue.

Attendees described that there was no immediate clarity at first, only a noticeable interruption in the program before security personnel began moving rapidly across the ballroom. Within moments, officials on site instructed guests to remain calm and prepare to leave in an organized manner.

One attendee told reporters that the reaction from security was “very fast and very controlled,” adding that guests were guided away in groups rather than rushing all at once, which helped prevent confusion during the evacuation.

Another guest recalled seeing officers positioning themselves near the stage and along the exits while directing movement through specific corridors inside the hotel. “We were told to just stay low and follow instructions,” the attendee said, describing the moment as structured despite the uncertainty.

Security teams reportedly coordinated across multiple levels of the venue, including adjoining halls and entry points, as they worked to secure the building and clear attendees from the main event space. Guests were later held in designated safe areas while officials confirmed that the situation was being contained.

According to eyewitness accounts reported by Reuters, the evacuation was carried out “in an orderly but urgent manner,” with protective details ensuring senior officials were escorted out separately while maintaining controlled movement throughout the venue.

Authorities have not released full operational details of the response but confirmed that multiple agencies, including the Secret Service and local law enforcement, were involved in securing the premises and managing guest evacuation.
