India and Russia in Talks for Additional S-400 Missile Systems

India: India and Russia are currently negotiating the delivery of additional S-400 Triumf long-range surface-to-air missile systems. According to TASS, Dmitry Shugayev, head of Russia’s Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, confirmed that while India already operates S-400 systems, there is potential for further cooperation and new deliveries, which are currently under negotiation.

Background of the Deal

India signed a $5.5 billion contract in 2018 for five S-400 missile systems to strengthen its air defence capabilities, especially in response to perceived threats from China.

Deliveries of the final two units are expected in 2026 and 2027, after multiple delays.

India-Russia Defence Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed strong ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised India for not succumbing to U.S. pressure to halt purchases from Russia.
