The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dropped a bombshell on the Kannada film industry. Popular actress Ranya Rao, also known as Harshavardhini Ranya, has been fined a staggering ₹102.55 crore in connection with an elaborate gold smuggling racket. This case has sent shockwaves through Karnataka and beyond, uncovering one of the largest smuggling operations linked to a public figure.

The DRI Investigation

The DRI, following a series of raids and surveillance operations, revealed that Ranya Rao was allegedly part of a smuggling network that trafficked over 127 kilograms of 24-karat gold from Dubai into India.

The investigation, spanning months, documented over 30 trips to Dubai, where she allegedly brought in undeclared gold, bypassing customs checks through concealment methods and alleged misuse of VIP airport privileges.

The March 3 Arrest

On March 3, 2025, the breakthrough came when Ranya Rao was intercepted at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Authorities seized 14.8 kilograms of gold strapped to her body, marking the start of one of the most high-profile gold smuggling cases in recent times.

Penalty Details

Along with Rao, the DRI has fined three of her alleged accomplices:

Tarun Konduru – ₹62 crore Sahil Sakariya Jain – ₹53 crore Bharat Kumar Jain – ₹53 crore

With these penalties combined, the total fines exceed ₹270 crore, making it one of the largest enforcement actions in the DRI’s history.

Legal Proceedings

Ranya Rao and the others remain in judicial custody under COFEPOSA (Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act). Bail has been denied as the case is still under active investigation.

The notice issued by the DRI reportedly spans 2,500 pages, with 11,000 supporting documents, detailing evidence of repeated trips, hawala money transfers, and logistics of the smuggling network.
