“I’m Not an Exotic Creature”: Polish Solo Traveler Shares Harrowing Experience in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh: A recent viral video by a Polish travel content creator has reignited the conversation on women’s safety and respectful conduct in India especially toward solo foreign travellers. Kasia, a Polish woman with over 13,000 followers on Instagram, is a solo traveler known for documenting her cultural explorations around the world. During her latest journey through the hills of Himachal Pradesh, Kasia faced a deeply unsettling incident that she has now shared in a candid and emotional video post. While descending from a guest house in a remote mountain area, Kasia was approached by a man who initially pretended to ask for help with taking a photograph. However, it soon became clear that he was not interested in photos of the landscape but wanted to take pictures of her. When she refused politely, stating that she wished to enjoy solitude, the man began following her and shouting in Hindi. The incident occurred during her solo travels in Himachal Pradesh, a popular Indian destination known for its tranquil beauty and warm locals. The exact date of the encounter was not specified, but Kasia’s video posted just days ago has already amassed over 210,000 likes, sparking widespread debate online. Kasia’s experience underscores growing concerns about the safety of women travellers in India, particularly those traveling alone. Her reaction firmly refusing, documenting the incident, and publicly speaking out has been praised by many as both brave and necessary. She highlighted a key message: “I’m not some exotic creature for people to gawk at or photograph. I am a human being. Respect my space.” In a follow-up post, she clarified that her message was not meant to generalise Indian men, but to call out unacceptable behaviour regardless of nationality. In a show of calm determination, Kasia turned on her camera and began recording the incident. The video features her voice shaken but steady as she repeatedly asks the man to stop following her. Her decision to record the moment ultimately caused the man to retreat. She later disabled comments on her post to prevent trolling and victim-blaming. Kasia has stated that she will continue her solo travels, undeterred by this encounter. Her post has sparked crucial discussions on social media about cultural sensitivity, boundaries, and the way foreign and Indian women are treated in public spaces. This incident serves as a stark reminder that while India offers incredible experiences for travellers, there remains a pressing need for increased public awareness, respect for personal space, and stricter action against harassment. As Kasia eloquently puts it, “It’s not about where you’re from it’s about how you treat people.” Her story now stands as both a warning and a wake-up call.
