Trump Administration Halts Immigration, Citizenship Processing for 19 Non-European Nations

In a move expected to impact thousands of applicants, the Trump administration has paused all immigration, green card, and U.S. citizenship applications filed by individuals from 19 non-European countries, citing heightened national security and public safety concerns.

The policy applies to nations previously subjected to a partial travel ban announced in June, further tightening restrictions on immigration pathways for affected regions. Among the countries on the list are Afghanistan and Somalia, both of which have long faced heightened scrutiny under U.S. immigration rules.

According to the official memorandum detailing the policy, the decision follows last weekโ€™s attack on U.S. National Guard personnel in Washington.

An Afghan national, arrested as the chief suspect, allegedly opened fire on Guard members, killing one and leaving another critically injured.

The administration stated that the temporary pause is intended to allow a comprehensive review of vetting procedures.

Critics, however, warned that the move may disproportionately affect families, refugees, and long-pending applicants awaiting legal status.

Officials have not indicated how long the suspension will remain in effect.
