The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), under Governor Sanjay Malhotra, has pivoted decisively toward stimulating economic growth, leveraging a combination of rate cuts, liquidity injections, and regulatory relaxations. This strategic shift comes as inflation cools to a 67-month low of 3.16% in April 2025, allowing the central bank to prioritize growth amid a projected GDP slowdown to 6.3% in FY25 from 9.2% in FY24. Below, we unpack the RBIโ€™s multi-pronged approach and its implications for Indiaโ€™s financial ecosystem.

RBI and Rate Cuts and Accommodative Stance

The RBI has cut the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) since February 2025, including a 25 bps reduction in April, bringing it to 6%โ€”the lowest since 2020. This marks a clear shift to an “accommodative” monetary policy stance, aimed at lowering borrowing costs and reviving credit growth, which slowed to 12% in FY25 from 16% the previous year. Governor Malhotra emphasized that with inflation now below the 4% target, supporting growth is paramount, especially given global headwinds like U.S. tariff tensions and sluggish export demand.

Liquidity Infusion and Regulatory Easing

The RBI has injected โ‚น8.57 lakh crore ($100 billion) since December 2024 via bond purchases, forex swaps, and open market operations to ease systemic liquidity deficits. This push is complemented by regulatory relaxations, including reduced Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) requirements for digital deposits and eased restrictions on bank investments in Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), freeing up โ‚น2.7โ€“3 lakh crore for lending. The central bank also signaled flexibility in Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) maintenance to help banks manage daily liquidity. These steps aim to mitigate risks akin to the 2023 Silicon Valley Bank crisis while channeling funds to startups, SMEs, and credit-starved sectors, ensuring rate cuts translate into affordable loans.

Growth vs. Inflation Dynamics – How does RBI Function?

Global economies in 2025 face a delicate balance: U.S. households gain from wage growth outpacing inflation, while Europe struggles with sluggish GDP and sticky services inflation. Emerging markets like India grow faster but combat food inflation and currency swings. Central banks cautiously ease policies amid falling energy prices, yet risks loomโ€”protectionism, U.S. tariffs, and labor shortages threaten to reignite price pressures. The challenge lies in sustaining growth without destabilizing disinflation trends.

Future Outlook and Risks

While the RBIโ€™s liquidity wave is poised to stimulate demand, economists caution against over-optimism. Nomura forecasts FY26 GDP growth at 6%, citing tariff-related risks, and expects further rate cuts to 5.5% by March 2026. Bond markets anticipate yield stabilization after a 38 bps drop in the 10-year benchmark, with the RBI likely pausing OMOs post-surplus transfer.

The RBIโ€™s aggressive liquidity measures and regulatory recalibration underscore its commitment to reinvigorating Indiaโ€™s economy. By aligning with global standards like Basel III while addressing domestic nuancesโ€”such as digital banking risksโ€”the central bank is navigating a complex macroeconomic landscape. Yet, as Madan Sabnavis of Bank of Baroda notes, the true test lies in sustaining growth amidst global volatility, where “timing is everything”.
