France Reaffirms Support for India’s Bid for Permanent UNSC Seat, Calls for Modernised Global Governance

A major diplomatic boost for New Delhi, France has once again thrown its weight behind India’s long-standing demand for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), including the right to veto. 

The renewed endorsement from Paris marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of a greater role in global decision-making and comes at a time when calls for comprehensive UN reforms are growing louder worldwide.

France has consistently supported India’s candidature over the years, but its latest declaration adds fresh momentum to New Delhi’s efforts. 

Citing the need for the UN’s apex security body to reflect contemporary geopolitical realities rather than the post-World War II order, France emphasised that meaningful UNSC reform is long overdue.

The statement also highlighted France’s position that Africa deserves two permanent seats due to its demographic and strategic importance. 

Additionally, Paris reiterated that each member of the “Group of 4”: India, Japan, Germany, and Brazil, merits a permanent place on the Council. This recognition emphasises India’s substantial global contributions as the world’s largest democracy, a major economic and nuclear power, and one of the most reliable UN peacekeeping forces.

Despite widespread support, UNSC reform has remained stalled for decades, largely due to a lack of consensus among the current five permanent members (P5). 

China’s continued resistance to India’s entry remains the principal obstacle, rooted in long-standing geopolitical tensions.

Nevertheless, France’s renewed push comes at a crucial juncture. With global governance debates intensifying and more nations calling for a representative and inclusive UNSC, India’s case appears stronger than ever. 

For many observers, the international community is inching closer to acknowledging a reality already evident on the world stage that India’s growing influence can no longer be ignored.
