Bengal Weather: Kalbaisakhi, Hailstorms Likely In 9 Districts Today; Kolkata Warms Up To 35°C
Kolkata Braces for 35°C Heat Amidst Weather Alerts

Kolkata, May 16, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kalbaisakhi induced thunderstorms and hailstorms across nine districts in West Bengal today. The alert encompasses Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, East Midnapore, Hooghly, East Bardhaman, Howrah, South 24 Parganas, and Kolkata. Residents can expect gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h, accompanied by heavy rainfall, lightning, and potential hailstorms.
Kalbaisakhi: A Seasonal Phenomenon
Kalbaisakhi, also known as Nor’wester, is a pre-monsoon weather event characterized by sudden, severe thunderstorms. These storms typically occur in the late afternoon or evening, bringing intense winds, heavy rain, and sometimes hail. They are common in Eastern India during the summer months, particularly in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha.
Impact on Kolkata and Surrounding Areas
Kolkata is experiencing temperatures soaring up to 35°C, with high humidity levels exacerbating discomfort. The IMD predicts that the impending Kalbaisakhi will bring temporary relief from the heat. However, the sudden onset of storms may disrupt daily activities and pose risks to life and property.
Precautionary Measures and Advisories
Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors during storm periods and to secure loose objects that could become projectiles in high winds. Authorities caution fishermen against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions. They urge the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
