Severe Weather Forces Emergency Request
On May 22, 2025, IndiGo flight 6E-212 from Delhi to Srinagar hit a hailstorm over northern India. To avoid severe turbulence, the pilot asked Lahore ATC for temporary entry into Pakistani airspace. However, the request was denied by Lahore ATC, compelling the pilot to declare an emergency with Srinagar ATC.
DGCA Initiates Probe into Incident
The DGCA has launched an investigation to review the incident and check for safety concerns. A DGCA official said they are examining the flight emergency and airspace denial to ensure protocols were followed and improve future safety.
Geopolitical Tensions Impacting Airspace Access
The denial of airspace access comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Following a militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities, India attributed the attack to Pakistani elements, a claim Pakistan has denied. In response, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian airlines, leading to rerouted flights and increased operational costs for carriers like IndiGo and Air India.
Operational Challenges for Indian Airlines
The airspace closure has forced Indian airlines to take longer routes, increasing fuel consumption and flight durations. IndiGo, for instance, has had to adjust approximately 50 international routes and cancel flights to destinations like Almaty and Tashkent. Air India has reported potential losses of up to $600 million annually if the airspace restrictions persist.
DGCA’s Measures to Mitigate Passenger Discomfort
In light of the extended flight times and potential delays, the DGCA has issued directives to airlines to enhance passenger support. These include proactive communication about revised flight routes, provision of adequate meals and beverages, and ensuring medical preparedness at stopover airports.
