“Pak Thought They Had Advantage But…”: Shashi Tharoor Decodes UN Talks
New Delhi, May 6, 2025 — Senior Congress leader and former UN Under-Secretary-General, Shashi Tharoor, delivered a sharp analysis of the recent UN diplomatic exchanges involving India and Pakistan. Speaking at a policy forum in New Delhi, Tharoor stated that Pakistan entered the talks thinking it held the upper hand, but India effectively countered its narrative with diplomacy and facts.
“Pak Thought They Had Advantage But…”: Shashi Tharoor Decodes UN Talks
India Held Its Ground, Says Tharoor
Addressing the media after the event, Shashi Tharoor on UN talks said, “Pakistan believed it could corner India with aggressive posturing. But India stood firm, backed by legal precedents and growing global support.”
He emphasized that India’s consistent position on Kashmir and its refusal to internationalize bilateral issues left Pakistan with limited options.
“New Delhi did not waver. Instead, we turned the conversation toward terrorism, development, and regional stability,” Tharoor noted.
Tharoor Critiques Pakistan’s Strategy
Tharoor asserted that Islamabad misjudged the international sentiment, especially after recent geopolitical shifts. He pointed to Pakistan’s assumption that the UN would favor its narrative on Kashmir.
“Pakistani diplomats entered with inflated expectations,” he said. “But the world sees through performative diplomacy. They ignored that credibility at the UN stems from consistency and facts, not theatrics.”
Diplomatic Momentum Favours India
Tharoor explained how India’s diplomatic engagements with the US, France, and other key Security Council members tilted the momentum.
“India now enjoys strategic partnerships with influential global players. We leveraged that intelligently at the UN,” he said. “We didn’t just defend our stance — we redefined the conversation.”
According to Tharoor, India highlighted its economic development model, disaster response leadership, and tech diplomacy to showcase itself as a responsible global actor.
UN Delegates Responded Positively
Several UN delegates, according to Tharoor, appreciated India’s constructive tone and data-backed presentations. “They saw India not as a disruptor, but a problem-solver,” he stated.
He added that India’s move to highlight cross-border terrorism with verified intelligence resonated across the floor.
“India didn’t resort to emotional appeals. We used facts and diplomacy. That’s why the UN’s response leaned in our favor,” Tharoor observed.
Opposition Leader but Nationalist Voice
Although Tharoor serves as a prominent opposition figure, he maintained a nationalist tone while discussing India’s stance on global platforms.
“We may differ domestically, but on matters of foreign policy and national security, we speak as Indians first,” he declared.
Political analysts have often praised Tharoor for his diplomatic insights, owing to his long tenure at the UN before entering Indian politics.
The Bigger Picture: India’s Evolving Role
Tharoor also commented on India’s long-standing aspiration for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council. He believes India’s performance during the recent talks strengthens that case.
“The world wants India to shoulder more responsibility. Our participation in peacekeeping, climate action, and multilateral trade speaks for itself,” he said.
He urged the Indian government to maintain diplomatic momentum and invest in long-term relationship-building.
