HO CHI MINH CITY โ€” Vietnam celebrates the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War with a large-scale military parade, fireworks, and a call for reconciliation and national unity. The event reflected pride in past sacrifices and focused on peace in a changing global landscape.

From Division to Unity

On April 30, 1975, the fall of Saigon marked the end of decades of war and the reunification of North and South Vietnam. On Wednesday, Vietnamโ€™s Communist Party General Secretary To Lam addressed thousands of citizens and foreign guests:

โ€œAll the Vietnamese are the descendants of Vietnam. They have the rights to live and work, to have freedom to pursue happiness and love in this country.โ€

He emphasized reconciliation and the need to โ€œrespect differencesโ€ while building a peaceful, prosperous Vietnam.

A Nation Celebrates

Crowds began gathering the night before in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, to secure spots for the parade. Teenagers waved flags, families wore red-and-yellow shirts, and military aircraft flew overhead as floats carried symbols of Vietnamese mythology and history.

โ€œNow itโ€™s time for peace,โ€ said Nguyen Thi Hue, a local spectator. โ€œPeace is the dream that everyone in the world wants.โ€

Troops from China, Laos, and Cambodia also marched in the parade, symbolizing regional solidarity. Dignitaries including Cambodiaโ€™s former leader Hun Sen and Laotian leader Thongloun Sisoulith attended alongside Vietnamโ€™s top officials.

Reflections on War and Legacy

The tone of the commemoration differed from earlier years, which focused more heavily on military victory. Analyst Nguyen Khac Giang of Singapore’s ISEASโ€“Yusof Ishak Institute noted:

โ€œThe war still defines Vietnamโ€™s unity, and its unresolved divides,โ€ he said, adding that the event showed Vietnamโ€™s shift toward economic growth and diplomacy.

Veterans like Pham Ngoc Son, who served along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, also embraced the focus on peace:

โ€œThe war is over a long time ago. There is only space for peace and friendship.โ€

U.S.โ€“Vietnam Relations: From War to Strategic Partnership

The anniversary coincides with 30 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. Despite a shared effort to overcome war legaciesโ€”including Agent Orange remediation and unexploded ordnance removalโ€”current U.S. policy under President Trump has raised concerns.

Heavy tariffs, canceled foreign aid, and diplomatic tensions have affected Vietnamโ€™s economic and humanitarian projects.

โ€œIt puts a big question mark on what the U.S. wants to achieve in Asia,โ€ said Huong Le-Thu of the International Crisis Group.

U.S. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper did not attend the ceremony, though U.S. Consul General Susan Burns was present.

Vietnamโ€™s Global Outlook

Vietnam continues to navigate its place in a tense Indo-Pacific region, balancing ties with both the U.S. and China. The parade and celebrations demonstrated not only pride in the past, but also a commitment to peace, development, and a more prominent role in global diplomacy.
