ED’s Closure Report Accepted, No Evidence of Money Laundering

The Congress on Monday demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal.
Their demand came after a Delhi court accepted the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) closure report in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) scam case.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged that before 2014, both the BJP and AAP had “fabricated scams” like 2G and CWG to tarnish the Congress’s image.

“Two honest leaders—Dr. Manmohan Singh and Sheila Dikshit — were falsely accused,” Ramesh said in a Hindi post on X.

He emphasized that the truth of the 2G case had already come out.
Now, the court had also accepted that no money-laundering occurred in the CWG case, he added.

“Both allegations were false! Modi and Kejriwal must apologise to the Congress and the people of India,” Ramesh asserted.

Kalmadi, Others Cleared of Money Laundering Charges

Special Judge Sanjeev Aggarwal accepted the ED’s closure report.
The report cleared former CWG organizing committee chief Suresh Kalmadi, secretary-general Lalit Bhanot, and others.

The court observed that the CBI had already filed a closure report in the original corruption case.
This case had been the basis for the ED’s money-laundering probe.

“Investigations did not prove any offence under Section 3 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA),” the judge said.

As a result, the court ended the money-laundering case linked to the CWG scandal.

Background: CWG Scam Sparked Political Uproar

The alleged CWG scam in 2010 had triggered a massive political controversy.
It led to several criminal and money-laundering cases being filed.

Kalmadi and others were accused of misconduct in awarding key contracts for the Games.
However, the CBI’s investigation found no incriminating evidence against them.

The agency filed its closure report in January 2014, stating that allegations could not be substantiated.

Congress Steps Up Its Attack

The Congress, seizing on the court’s verdict, intensified its attack on the BJP and AAP.
Party leaders accused Modi and Kejriwal of running false campaigns to mislead the public ahead of the 2014 general elections.

Congress claimed that the closure of both 2G and CWG cases shows that their leaders were unfairly targeted.
