UP to Launch ‘Dr Ambedkar Zero Poverty Mission’, Says CM Yogi

On Monday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that the upcoming ‘Zero Poverty’ Mission in the state will be named after Bharat Ratna Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar. The initiative, launching later this month, aims to uplift every underprivileged individual above the poverty line.

While addressing a gathering hosted by the Ambedkar Mahasabha to mark Dr Ambedkar’s 134th birth anniversary, CM Yogi explained the program’s objective. “Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, this mission ensures that no person remains deprived of basic amenities or access to welfare schemes,” he stated.

Mission to Cover Lakhs in First Phase

The Chief Minister revealed that in the first phase, the government will identify 14–15 lakh families. Each Gram Panchayat will select 20–25 families currently left out of government schemes. He emphasized that the state and central governments will work jointly to connect these families with essential benefits.

Additionally, he noted, “We are naming this scheme after Babasaheb as a tribute to his legacy of social, educational, and economic empowerment.” Uttar Pradesh will become the first Indian state to formally implement a targeted Zero Poverty strategy.

Ambedkar’s Life as a Beacon

Reflecting on Dr Ambedkar’s life, CM Yogi recounted his remarkable journey. “Despite several hardships, he pursued higher education in England with support from the Maharaja of Baroda,” he said. After returning, Ambedkar focused on empowering marginalized communities and actively participated in the freedom struggle.

He reminded the audience that Dr Ambedkar chaired the Constitution Drafting Committee and served as India’s first Law Minister. “Our Constitution has united 140 crore citizens from every region, making India the world’s largest democracy,” he added.

Government Schemes Aligned with Ambedkar’s Vision

According to the Chief Minister, many current welfare schemes align with Dr Ambedkar’s ideals. He credited former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee with initiating efforts toward Ambedkar’s vision, which PM Modi has further strengthened. “Even during the COVID-19 crisis, India ensured the rights and welfare of its citizens,” he pointed out.

During his 2017 visit to the Ambedkar Mahasabha, CM Yogi had promised to ensure land rights and permanent housing for the poor. Since then, under the PM Swamitva Yojana, over 1 crore families received land ownership documents (‘Gharaunis’). Furthermore, 56 lakh families have received housing under various schemes.

Youth Empowerment and Sanitation Initiatives

He also highlighted the CM Yuva Udyami Abhiyan, which provides interest-free and collateral-free loans to entrepreneurs from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and EBCs. So far, over 30,000 youth have benefited. “Now, we aim to support one lakh new entrepreneurs annually,” he declared.

Moreover, Gram Panchayat committees managing community toilets will now receive a monthly honorarium to ensure proper maintenance and support for sanitation workers.

Lessons from History and Present-Day Challenges

Recalling the sacrifices of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Jogendra Nath Mandal, the Chief Minister said, “Ambedkar never compromised on dignity, even when humiliated. His loyalty to the nation was unwavering.” He lamented that Mandal’s contributions are often forgotten, stressing the importance of learning from history.

CM Yogi also warned of forces attempting to weaken the nation. “India must remain united. We must stay alert and preserve our collective strength,” he urged.

Citing developments in Pakistan and Bangladesh, he noted how India has become a protector of humanity, giving dignity to marginalized communities. He contrasted this with groups that incited unrest, accusing the Congress and Samajwadi Party of undermining Ambedkar’s legacy. “They insulted him in life and tried to erase his values after his death,” he alleged.

Honoring Ambedkar Through Action

He pointed out that the Congress once obstructed the construction of Ambedkar’s memorial in Delhi, and the SP openly opposed it. “But today, Babasaheb’s values are being embraced nationwide,” he declared.

He called upon citizens to follow Ambedkar’s core message: “Be educated because only education can keep you from being misled.” CM Yogi urged families to take full advantage of welfare programs, educate their children, and unite to fight injustice.

“Only through education can we ensure economic empowerment. By following Babasaheb’s path, we can secure a better future for our children,” he concluded.
