Economic Boost: Dubai Crown Prince’s India Visit Sparks New Partnerships
On the 8th and 9th April 2025, Dubai Crown Price, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of UAE His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, paid an official visit to India. H.H Dubai Crown Prince presented India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, with a replica of his grandfather H.H Sheikh Rashid’s Bisht-traditional embroidered cloak worn over the Kandura by Arab men.
Honourable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi shared on X-“Dubai has played a key role in advancing the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This special visit reaffirms our deep-rooted friendship and paves the way for even stronger collaboration in the future.”
Historical Ties
The relationship between India and the UAE dates to the Indus Valley Civilization. Historical evidence shows that Harappan imports included metals & precious stones, while exports consisted of fine muslin cloth, ornaments, timber, and more. Fast forward to 2021, the UAE emerged as one of India’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade reaching $68.4 billion.
Milestones in Modern India-UAE Cooperation and Collaboration
- Opened new avenues to strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and the UAE.
- H.H Crown Prince also met Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, to discuss the progress of the Virtual Trade Corridor (VTC).
- Establishment a campus of IIM Ahmedabad in Dubai, with the first MBA program set to commence in September 2025.
- Developing of ship- repair clusters at Kochi and Vadinar.
- Opening an Indian Office of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce.
- Setting up the first overseas campus of the Indian Institute of foreign Trade (IIFT) at the Indian Pavilion in Expo City Dubai.
- Announcing the establishment of a 100- bed “India-UAE Friendship Hospital” by Dubai government to provide affordable healthcare for the blue-collar diaspora in the UAE.
Way Forward
The India- UAE relationship, rooted in the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, has evolved into a robust partnership. From shaping the defence landscape through joint military exercises like Desert Eagle to strengthening cultural ties with the establishment of a Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi last year, the bond continues to grow. The recent visit by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum marks another milestone in this enduring friendship.
