Jadavpur on Alert: Adhikari Warns of ‘Strict Action’

Jadavpur University is once again at the centre of a political storm, with West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari warning of strict action against those he described as sympathisers of “anti-national forces” on the campus.

Speaking in the West Bengal Assembly on September 10, Adhikari alleged that slogans such as “Bharat tere tukde honge” and “Kashmir mange azaadi” had been raised at Jadavpur University. He said such slogans would not be tolerated and warned that those supporting such activities would face action.

The remarks have added another layer to the continuing debate over political activity and ideological clashes at the university, which has a long history of student activism and dissent.

Adhikari’s comments came during an Assembly discussion on the state government’s move concerning the transfer of teaching and non-teaching staff between state universities. The legislation has itself triggered concerns over university autonomy, with critics questioning the extent of government intervention in academic institutions.

The latest controversy, however, goes beyond a political exchange between rival groups. For students on campus, repeated clashes over ideology can create an atmosphere where political disagreements begin to overshadow everyday academic life.

Jadavpur University has historically been a space where political expression, protest and dissent have had a strong presence. That tradition has often made the campus a focal point for larger political debates in Bengal. But the question remains how such expression can coexist with institutional discipline, student safety and the right to disagree without intimidation.

While any allegation involving violence, threats or unlawful activity warrants investigation under due process, political descriptions such as “anti-national” are themselves contested and should not replace evidence or established procedures.

The latest warning therefore places Jadavpur at another difficult intersection of politics, free expression and institutional authority. As the debate grows louder, the challenge for the university will be to ensure that disagreement remains part of campus life without allowing confrontation to come at the cost of students’ safety, education or dignity.
