From Puri to the World: Sudarsan Pattnaik’s Sand Art Legacy

Sudarsan Pattnaik remarked after received the award that, “I am honoured to receive this recognition at Sandworld  2025. My sculpture of Lord Ganesha reflects the global call for peace.”

Acclaimed sand artist, Sudarsan Pattanaik became the first Indian to won the Fred Darrington Sand Art Award at the Sandworld 2025 International Sand Art Festival that was  held in Weymouth, Dorset, UK.  This year the award marks a special tribute on centenary year of magnificent British Sculptor Fred Darrington.

Hailed from the Odisha previous he received Padma Shri conferred by the Government of India and other numerous prestigious awards in Internationally. He is also the first Indian to receive this international honour. He made 10 feet high Lord Ganesha Sculpture for the event and highlight India’s soft power at the International Festival. Entire nation is being proud of him. Sandworld is located at Lodmoor Country Park in Weymouth, is one of the UK’s premier sand art attractions. This year’s festival opened on Saturday and will run through November.

From the early years of age, Sudarsan Pattnaik was passionate about Art. Born and brought up in Puri which is located at the Eastern side of India adjoining Bay of Bengal and known for its natural beauty and pilgrimage site. He was also a Guinness World Record holder for making the world’s largest sandcastle located on Puri Beach, Odisha in the year 2017.
