Gour Banga University to Hold Convocation After Nearly a Decade

After nearly a decade-long wait, preparations are underway for the convocation of Gour Banga University in Malda. University authorities have started the initial process and aim to organise the convocation within the next four months.

The university’s last convocation was held in 2017. Since then, more than three lakh students who completed their undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes have reportedly been deprived of receiving their certificates and medals through a formal convocation.

The delay has also created difficulties for students, with graduates and postgraduates often having to wait in long queues on the university campus to collect their certificates. University officials have also faced law and order issues related to the process.

BJP MLA from English Bazar and the party’s chief whip in the Assembly, Amlan Bhaduri, has taken initiatives to help restart the convocation process. He said efforts would be made to ensure that the event is held without further delay.

The University Vice-Chancellor Ashish Bhattacharya said the Chancellor and Governor had advised the university to take steps to organise the convocation at the earliest. Two meetings have already been held, with another meeting expected soon.

The Vice-Chancellor said preparations would continue despite the upcoming Puja holidays and examinations. If everything goes according to plan, the convocation is expected to be held between January 15 and 22.
