West Bengal Teachers Recruitment Scam: A Crisis in Governance and Accountability

West Bengal is grooving with lots of scams from the last 20 years so it’s high time to think about accountability and transparency in recruitment of Government Jobs. From the Coal Scam, Narada Sting Operation, Rose Valley Scam, Sharada Group Financial Scandal, West Bengal School Service Commission Recruitment Scam and others raises the question of accountability and transparency in the Political Process and created havoc on public trust and aspirations in the whole system.

The West Bengal Teachers’ Recruitment Scam?

In 2016, West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) under the State Level Selection Process (SLST) recruited more than 25,700 Teachers and Non- Teaching Staff for State -run and State- aided schools therefore affected teachers filed a petition against the fraudulent, manipulative selection process, expired recruitment panel and tempered evidence. Later on, 2022, Partha Chatterjee was arrested from his residence by the E.D in connection with the alleged Sate School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment fraud cases along with his abide actress Arpita Mukherjee.

Legal Battle

Many candidates those who have passed State Level Selection Test (SLST) honestly with their sheer hard work had filed petitions and therefore a panel was formed at Calcutta High Court under the direction of Supreme Court to examine the issue.

Judgement Day: High Court Vs Supreme Court

On 22nd April last year, The Calcutta High Court ordered the cancellation of appointment of Teaching as well as Non-Teaching Staffs whether tainted or not declared the entire recruitment process tainted and lacking credibility. Aftermath, the present ruling government honourable Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee challenged the Calcutta High Court Verdict. After that on 3rd April 2025, Supreme Court upheld Calcutta High Court Verdict of termination of Teachers and Non-Teaching Staffs of more than 25,000 and ordered fresh recruitment process done within three months though S.C spared the jobs of different-abled candidates and some other candidates those who did not fall into the category of tainted and fraud on humanitarian grounds.

Political Ramifications

On the one side, the ruling government of West Bengal wants to review the Supreme Court Verdict and did not accept it and on the other side, the ruling government of West Bengal is putting allegations against Calcutta High Court Judge Justice Abhijit Ganguly later he became a BJP MP from Tamluk. BJP demands the honourable Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s resignation over teachers’ fraud.

This issue has affected tremendously all the stakeholders especially the Bengal Government it drastically reduced trust and quality of public institutions. Comment down your thought
