CBFC removes caste references from ‘Phule’ amid controversy

Directed by Ananth Mahadevan, ‘Phule’ is based on the story of social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule who fought against caste and gender injustice. The film has encountered controversy and backlash before its release. Initially scheduled for release on April 11, 2025, the film has been postponed by two weeks, with a new release date set for April 25, 2025.

The move comes after the Brahmin Federation, led by President Anand Dave, alleged that the film promotes casteism and portrays Brahmins in a negative light.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), which had initially cleared the film with a ‘U’ certificate, later demanded multiple changes to the film. One of the changes was the removal of a voiceover referencing to the caste system. CBFC has also has directed the makers to remove several caste-related references from the film. This includes terms such as ‘Mahar,’ ‘Mang,’ ‘Peshvai,’ and reference to ‘Manu’s system of caste.’

The film features Pratik Gandhi in the lead role of Jyotirao Phule, also referred to as Mahatma Phule, alongside Patralekhaa as his wife Savitribai Phule.

What is the controversy?

Brahmin Federation President Anand Dave had expressed concerns regarding the trailer of the film Phule, stating that it promotes casteism. Furthermore, Dave demanded that the significant contributions of the ‘black Brahmin’ community in supporting the Phules be formally acknowledged.

In an effort to address the controversy, former state minister Chhagan Bhujbal has met with director Ananth Mahadevan and the film’s producers to discuss the matter.

The director’s response

Director Ananth Mahadevan responded to the controversy by assuring that the film was a result of comprehensive research and historical facts. He stated that he aimed to remain true to the facts rather than sensationalize the story for dramatic effect.

“We don’t get into a film with these kinds of doubts and fears in mind… You don’t deserve to make the movie if you’re going to carry such fear when discussing a fearless couple like Jyotiba and Savitribai,” he stated in an interview with News18.

He further clarified, “I’m a Brahmin myself. Naturally, I will first ask myself if I’m doing the right thing if I have to make a movie about caste differences. I wouldn’t be letting the world’s Brahmins come and question me and cast doubt on my motives. They should be aware that you are not allowed to question the patient’s treating physician. The doctor would care about his patients’ well-being.”

Maharashtra opposition slams CBFC

“India’s censor board did not object to a single scene from propaganda movies like The Kashmir Files or The Kerala Story. But it was quick to make objections to films like the Phule biopic. It shows the mentality of the board,” said NCP (SP) state president Jayant Patil.

NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad questioned the intentions of those who are opposing the film. He asked if they are trying to hide history. “I have spoken to the film’s producer. He said the film will now be released on April 25, instead of the earlier planned date of April 11. The casteist censor board has tried to strengthen the casteist mindset by suggesting changes in the film. The producers had no option but to accept them,” he stated.
