After Student’s Fatal Highway Accident, SMVIT Students Urge Government to Construct Skywalk for Safety
Tragedy struck SMVIT, Bengaluru, in the early hours of a typical school day. A bright student of Information Science and Engineering, second semester, Mr. Kiran lost his life attempting to cross the National Highway near his campus. His death has raised a strong movement among his peers who are now agitating for the construction of a skywalk so that no more lives are lost.
The accident, which went down at the ever-dangerous “Mvit Cross,” also left two other students injured, now recovering in a local hospital. This incident spotlights the peril students face daily while navigating the busy thoroughfare to reach their classes.
The students, in an impassioned petition addressed to the government authorities, expressed a sense of collective grief and urgency. “We, the deeply disturbed students of SMVIT, have taken an initiative to address this petition to the respective government authorities as we mourn the tragic loss of our fellow student Mr Kiran. He did not lose his life due to illness or natural causes but rather in an unfortunate accident while crossing the National Highway at ‘Mvit Cross’ to reach our college,” the petition states.
A highway that cuts across their way to academic haven has always been a source of headache. “This is not a small problem; the daily journey to our institute should not carry a potential death sentence,” the petition reads. “Our colleges are meant to be a place of nurturing knowledge, not a place where lives are lost.
The students are demanding the provision of a skywalk, which they feel will be a simple solution to guarantee safety. It would provide a safe passage above the dangerous traffic and would save students and staff from the hazardous crossing that they have to make at present.
“This tragic incident is a call to action and puts forward an imminent requirement of implementing safety measures,” the petition further reads. The appeal by the students reaches out to the community at large, where they are urging, “Whether you are a day scholar, hostelite, traveling via college bus or an outsider, your support matters a lot. Please support this cause as a responsible student of our college or citizens of the society to enhance the safety of every individual.”
The unified voice of the student body from SMVIT echoes within the corridors of their institution into the public sphere, hoping to reach the ears of those in power. As far as they are concerned, swift government intervention is not only desirable but also imperative if future tragedies are to be averted.
The spirits of the students at SMVIT do not fizzle out in the wake of recent loss, but they certainly are. A sense that the bright future Mr. Kiran epitomized has suddenly dimmed drives them home. As clear as can be, their message is: no more lives lost for the simple act of attending college. A solution, they argue, lies at their fingertips. It’s time to build the skywalk.
