Nipah Scare Intensifies in Bengal as Doctor, Nurse Hospitalised; Two Confirmed Cases Critical, 120+ Under Surveillance

West Bengal is under the high alert in the night, as new anxieties of a possible transmission of the lethal Nipah virus arose, with a junior doctor and a nurse who had close contact with a confirmed Nipah case hospitalised at Kolkata Infectious Diseases and Beliaghata General Hospital. Both medical personnel became symptomatic with the virus and are currently put under severe isolation, having their samples tested urgently. The authorities in the hospital assure that they are under close supervision, despite fear that has taken hold in the medical society.
This new situation occurs against a preexisting situation of alarm. Two nurses who previously tested positive of the Nipah virus are now fighting against their lives at a private hospital in Barasat, in North 24 Parganas. Their health is in a critical state. They both have been on ventilator support and said to be in a coma. Their diagnosis of being infected by the National Institute of Virology in Pune has created ripples throughout the state period since Nipah is regarded as being fatal and quick spreading in areas of close contact.
According to the health officials, the junior doctor and the nurse presently admitted in Kolkata had treated one of the infected nurses in Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. This close contact has brought up grave doubts regarding the transmission through hospitals, a case that has been quite risky in past Nipah outbreaks in the country. Their test results are pending, but no precaution is being taken by their authorities, and the entire emergency procedures have been put on the alert.
The case has led to colossal contact tracing efforts in various districts. According to the authorities, over 120 individuals that have had close contact with the confirmed patients have been identified up to date. This involves the family members, other doctors, nurses, hospital staff, and even ambulance drivers. Security patrols are also operating 24 hours in North 24 Parganas, Purba Bardhaman, and Nadia to curb further propagation.
The Central government has intervened in response to the growing crisis and a National Joint Outbreak Response Team has been deployed to the West Bengal authorities. The team will have a role of reinforcing containment efforts, monitoring and ensuring rapid response at the level of hospitals and at the community level. Nipah is a notifiable disease, and all suspected cases are being reported on the spot, which means state and central agencies can coordinate their efforts.
Early research indicates that the infection might have started in a border village and it may be associated with eating of raw date palm sap that may have been contaminated with fruit bats, which are known to be natural carriers of the Nipah virus. Health authorities have again cautioned the people not to take raw or unprocessed date palm sap and observe high level hygiene especially in the affected and surrounding regions. Since fear is spreading with the virus, doctors claim that the coming few days are important. Hospitalisation of healthcare employees with suspected symptoms has increased anxiety to demonstrate the danger of frontline medical personnel. In the meantime, the state is now keeping its fingers crossed in anticipation of the test results in hope that containment can be effected before a broader outbreak. It is an unstable situation that is severe and monitored.
