18% Revenue Rise Under Suvendu Adhikari Government: Real Turnaround or Short-Term Relief?

Just three months after Suvendu Adhikari’s government came to power, West Bengal has reported an 18% rise in revenue collection compared with the same period last year. But the figures also raise questions about how long this growth can actually continue.
The government had earlier claimed that it collected nearly ₹1,000 crore more in just one month than during the same period of the previous year. Officials attributed the increase to tighter monitoring, action against tax evasion and efforts to stop revenue leakages.
However, the state’s financial situation remains under pressure. West Bengal is carrying a debt burden of more than ₹7.5 lakh crore, while a large share of its revenue is already needed for interest payments, salaries, pensions, welfare schemes and development work.
The government says it has increased checks on mines, stone quarries, sand and other natural resources to ensure that the state receives its full share of royalties and taxes. But critics may question whether plugging leakages alone can keep revenue growth at such a high level throughout the financial year.
Is the 18% growth sustainable?
The bigger challenge for the Adhikari government will be turning this short-term rise into a long-term improvement.
Economists argue that revenue cannot depend only on tighter checks and recovering unpaid taxes. The state will need new industries, more investment, business expansion and employment to create a stronger and more stable revenue base.
For now, the 18% figure gives the government some breathing room. But with a massive debt burden and rising expenditure, the real test is whether this revenue growth can survive beyond the first three months.
