Maharashtra Civic Elections 2026: Voting Underway, Security Tight, Leaders React Amid Allegations

Mumbai, 15 January 2026:
Voting in the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections is underway today across the state, including the highly watched Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election. Polling started at 7:30 AM and will continue until 5:30 PM across 29 municipal corporations including major cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Nagpur. Officials say more than 3.48 crore voters are eligible to cast their ballots at 39,092 polling stations set up statewide.
By early afternoon, officials reported a near 30% turnout in local body voting, with the BMC showing around 25–30% turnout in Mumbai till 1:30 PM.

Security and Logistics in Place
Authorities have deployed significant security measures across urban centres to ensure a peaceful voting environment. Barricades, police checkpoints, and dedicated monitoring teams are active especially in high-density areas of Mumbai and Pune.
Innovative technology like geofencing is being used for the first time to track vehicles carrying polling equipment and staff in Mumbai, a step officials say is meant to prevent logistical issues and misuse.

Smooth but Not Without Controversy
While most polling stations have seen orderly voting processes, the State Election Commission (SEC) is probing viral videos online showing voters appearing to wipe off the ‘indelible’ finger ink — a traditional safeguard against multiple voting. The SEC clarified that attempts to remove voting ink are considered an offence and will be dealt with legally, reinforcing that once voting is logged electronically or on paper, re-voting is not permitted.
Opposition leaders, including members of Shiv Sena (UBT), have raised concerns about voting irregularities. Some allege possible voter list issues and pointed to these videos in press statements, calling for transparent action. The SEC has responded by stressing adherence to election rules and cautioning against misinformation.
In Pune, election officials reported isolated incidents of alleged bogus voting and disruptions, prompting local polling staff and party workers to intervene and report the matter to authorities.

Mixed Reactions From Leaders and Voters
Several political figures cast their votes early in the day. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who voted in Mumbai, encouraged citizens to participate actively rather than engage in mere political discussion.
Others have used the day to push their narratives, some claiming the polls are a test of governance, while opposition voices frame the day as a challenge to electoral fairness.
Meanwhile, ordinary voters, including senior citizens and families, showed up in steady numbers at polling stations. Officials said participation was visible in urban and suburban booths alike.

Polling will close at 5:30 PM today, and vote counting is scheduled for 16 January 2026. Results are expected later that day, which will be seen as a benchmark for political strength ahead of the next state and national elections.
