Abhishek Banerjee’s Delhi march over SIR—Is Bengal being branded a ‘criminal state’?

Kolkata: On December 31, 2025, the Trinamool Congress delegation formed the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Delhi. The rally will be led by All India Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He complained:
- Logistics discrepancies have been found in the data of 1.36 crore voters in West Bengal.
- Many voters were either dead or alive.
- During this process, the common people had to face a lot of harassment.
- This SIR has led to the death of many ordinary people.
- This SIR process is being used to disenfranchise voters selectively, not to clean up the electoral rolls.
But why is Abhishek Banerjee making this claim?
As per Abhishek Banerjee, Discrepancy Scrutiny of Bengal is observed.

Although
- Only West Bengal is making so much noise about these illegal voters
- Micro-observers are appointed only in Bengal.
If the voter deletion is more in other places, is West Bengal still being seen as a criminal state?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has repeatedly alleged:
There are many Bangladeshis and Rohingyas in this Bengal, their names are in this voter list.
Abhishek Banerjee, however, questioned the BJP’s claim.
If the SIR is really a process of identifying Bangladeshis and Rohingyas, then how many Bangladeshis and Rohingyas have been caught?
Transparency failure detected in SIR process. The Trinamool Congress is demanding:
- 1.36 crore doubtful voters
- Full reason needed regarding a dead or suspected voter.
Abhishek Banerjee claims: If the ECI really has nothing to hide, why has not it come out with a list yet?
On December 31, 2025, a Trinamool Congress delegation led by Abhishek Banerjee will leave for New Delhi and met Gyanesh Kumar.
Currently, the SIR in West Bengal is over. Officially, 5.7 percent of the voters were excluded. So far, no announcement has been made on the reversal, cancellation or change of name. At the moment, the situation is tense but unresolved.
