Indonesia to buy India’s Brahmos supersonic cruise missile

New Delhi, November 20: After the Philippines, Indonesia is preparing to buy India’s Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles. It is reported that Indonesia’s interest in this matter has increased. Indonesian Defense Minister Sajjafri Syamsudin is scheduled to visit India from November 26 to 28, during which important agreements on the purchase of Brahmos are to be discussed. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh recently confirmed at a Brahmos event in Lucknow that Indonesia is sincerely interested in buying Brahmos and the deal can go ahead. This interest of Indonesia is considered a big step towards further strengthening India’s defense partnership in Southeast Asia.

According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, Syamsudin’s visit to India follows a series of meetings and reciprocal visits between senior military officials of both countries in recent months. Discussions are underway at a rapid pace at the diplomatic and defense levels between the two countries on the Brahmos missile deal.

Incidentally, BrahMos is an advanced missile jointly developed by India and Russia that can be launched from land, sea and air platforms. It has a range of 290 to 700 km, a speed of Mach 2.8 (almost three times the speed of sound) or 3500 km/h, is capable of carrying a 300 kg conventional warhead and is capable of hitting targets with high precision. Its low altitude and speed make it almost impossible to intercept. India is already preparing to deliver the third and final batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines, completing a $375 million contract signed in 2022. The previous batches were delivered in 2024 and earlier this year. The Philippines is India’s first foreign customer to buy BrahMos missiles. If Indonesia then signs this deal, India will be able to maintain its strong foothold in the international defense market.
