Washington, D.C.: In a major policy decision, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday (local time) that only one European nation will be allowed to purchase oil from Russia, while all others will face strict sanctions if they attempt to do so.

The announcement came just weeks after the United States blacklisted two of Russia’s largest oil companies. The White House stated that any country engaging in trade with these companies will be subject to severe penalties.

Explaining the exception, President Trump said the decision was made after a “strategic assessment” of the current geopolitical situation. However, he did not reveal the name of the European country that would receive the exemption.

For nearly four years, the war between Russia and Ukraine has continued unabated. President Trump has reportedly made several attempts to broker peace between the two nations, but without success. According to the U.S. administration, Russia’s ongoing oil trade is helping fund its war efforts.

“The only way to stop the war is to cut off the financial lifeline ” the White House press statement read. “By targeting Russia’s oil revenue, we aim to pressure President Vladimir Putin into ending the conflict.”

The United States has also imposed steep tariffs on India for continuing to buy Russian oil. A 50% tax has been levied on Indian imports of American goods as a retaliatory measure.

President Trump has expressed frustration toward several European nations that continue to import Russian oil despite repeated warnings from Washington. “America stands firm against funding aggression,” he stated. “Those who choose to ignore our sanctions will face consequences.”

The move has drawn sharp reactions across Europe and Asia, as countries dependent on Russian energy scramble to reassess their trade and diplomatic strategies.
