WBNUJS Marks Silver Jubilee with Special Cover Release in Kolkata

29 August-Kolkata, India: On Thursday, the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) celebrated its silver jubilee with the launch of a unique cover cancellation using my stamp at Kolkata’s Town Hall. T S Sivagnanam, the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, revealed the exclusive cover as the Chief Guest.

Late Professor NR Madhava Menon founded NJUS, which became one of the most prestigious national law universities in India. NIRF 2025 ranks it fourth among Indian law schools, and it has NAAC A+ accreditation.

Numerous humanitarian, cultural, and academic initiatives will be part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations all year long.

TS Sivaganam on the importance of law

During the silver jubilee celebration, the Calcutta Chief Justice TS Sivaganam emphasised the value of law in contemporary society, saying that it has become an essential component of human life. He commended the university’s 25-year history, pointing out that it has been a turning point in the legal education industry.

He said “West Bengal has Universities which are 100-200 year old, but 25 years for a law college is a milestone. I have had a host of interns in Calcutta High Court and 80 percent were from NUJS. At one point I had to request, I want students from government colleges and Calcutta university interns like from Hazra Law College.”

The Chief Justice also praised and applauded West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her continuous support towards the institution and education in West Bengal.

He claims that the legal profession does not need to be updated, but judges never cease to learn. He further added that “From civil judge to High Court, we continuously train. Learning law does not confine itself to the four walls of the classroom.”

Some important members of the state, such as the Minister-in-charge of Law, Judicial & Labour Department, Government of West Bengal; Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, Justice Soumen Sen, Ashok Kumar, the Chief Postmaster General, West Bengal Circle, and Justice Apurba Sinha Roy, also attended the silver jubilee celebrations.

According to Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty, globalisation has drastically changed legal education and given students a wider range of professional alternatives. Law Minister Moloy Ghatak emphasised the substantial financial commitments made to NUJS and promised ongoing government support.
