Kolkata Weather Today: Rain Loses Its Grip, But Humidity Keeps the City on Alert

KOLKATA, September 15, 2026: Kolkata is witnessing a relative easing of the monsoon’s recent intensity on Tuesday, with the city beginning the day under a mix of sunshine and clouds. After the spells of rain that affected Kolkata and several parts of south Bengal in recent days, the latest forecast indicates that the city is unlikely to see a major bout of heavy rainfall today, although isolated showers remain possible, particularly during the afternoon.

The weather is expected to remain distinctly monsoonal rather than completely dry. Intermittent cloud cover, brief spells of rain and periods of sunshine could alternate through the day, creating the familiar September weather pattern in which conditions can change rapidly within a few hours. The latest forecast puts Kolkata’s daytime temperature in the mid-30s Celsius, while the night-time temperature is expected to remain in the upper 20s, keeping the city relatively warm despite the possibility of rain.

For commuters, the afternoon could remain the more unsettled period. While there is no indication of a major heavy-rain episode over Kolkata today, a passing shower could still affect traffic movement and create temporary waterlogging in vulnerable pockets. Residents travelling during the second half of the day may therefore want to keep rain protection handy, particularly as localised showers can develop even when much of the city remains dry.

Humidity, meanwhile, will continue to play an important role in Kolkata’s weather experience. Even when rainfall decreases, moisture-laden air can make temperatures feel considerably warmer than the thermometer suggests. The India Meteorological Department’s current observations show Kolkata around 29.8°C with humidity at about 83% in its latest city observation, highlighting the persistent moisture in the atmosphere.

The broader weather picture across West Bengal, however, remains more active than conditions in Kolkata. While south Bengal is expected to see a reduction in rainfall intensity, parts of north Bengal continue to face the possibility of heavy to very heavy rain. Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri are among the areas where the rainfall threat remains more pronounced, with thunderstorms and gusty winds also possible in several northern districts.

The changing rainfall pattern comes as the southwest monsoon enters a gradual transition phase over the country. The IMD has said conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from parts of west Rajasthan around September 19. However, this does not mean that eastern India, including West Bengal, is immediately moving into a dry-weather phase.

For Kolkata, the immediate forecast instead points towards a fluctuating combination of heat, humidity, cloud cover and occasional rain. The coming days are also expected to retain the possibility of afternoon showers, suggesting that the city’s monsoon story is far from over even as the intensity of the recent spell begins to recede.

For residents, the biggest takeaway is that Kolkata may get a temporary break from persistent rain, but the city is not yet ready to put away its umbrellas. A warm afternoon, sudden cloud build-up and a short spell of rain could remain part of the daily weather rhythm.
