Medvedev Fined Heavily After On-Court Meltdown at US Open 2025

29 August-Kolkata, India: Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev received a huge fine for his collapse on the court after losing to the US Open 2025 in the first round earlier this week. The authorities fined the Russian tennis player and the 2021 US Open champion $42,500 after his heated conversations with the chair umpire Greg Allensworth, as well as for sitting courtside after the match and continuously shattering his racquet.

Tennis authorities fined Daniil Medvedev, a Russian, $12,500 for abusing racquets and $30,000 for unsportsmanlike behaviour. This amount is almost equivalent to about 40% of the $110,000 in prize money that the world No. 13 received for competing in the year’s last Grand Slam Round 1.

Medvedev pays for his rude behaviour on court

The incident happened during Medvedev’s first-round meeting with France’s Benjamin Bonzi, who last met and defeated Medvedev at Wimbledon the previous year. When Bonzi missed his first serve in the third set, he was up two sets and ahead 5-4.

However, Greg Allensworth, the match’s chair umpire, awarded the first serve back to Bonzi because a photographer accidentally stepped into the court a few times, which interrupted play.

Russian Daniil Medvedev did not take the decision on a good note, as he not only criticised but also confronted the chair umpire for his decision, arguing that the photographer’s brief movements within the court were insufficient to qualify as interference.

Medvedev criticised by tennis legends

After falling behind two sets, the 2021 US Open winner rallied to win the third set in tie-breaks and earn a bagel in the fourth. The final laugh came when Bonzi, who had defeated Medvedev in four sets at Wimbledon, won the fifth set 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 0-6, 6-4.

The frustated Medvedev took out his anger on his tennis racquet slamming it repeatedly, which caused tennis greats like Boris Becker and John McEnroe to react strongly.

On the otherhand, the Frenchman Bonzi continued on with his US Open 2025 journey in the second round where he met Marcos Giron and defeated him by  2-6, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4  to set a third round meeting with his fellow countryman Arthur Rinderknech.
