Due to cloudy weather in Texas, Elon Musk’s SpaceX postponed the 10th launch of its Starship rocket. This has caused another slight delay in its efforts to tackle development delays and achieve essential objectives for the Mars rocket systemโs reusable design.
The 171-feet tall Starship upper half and 232-feet tall Super Heavy combinedly exceed the height of New Yorkโs Statue of Liberty. Due to overcast weather the launch mount at SpaceX’s Starbase rocket facility with liftoff several times.
SpaceX had loaded the rocket with millions of pounds of propellant and was preparing for launch, but around 8:00 p.m. EST (0000 GMT). The company decided to scrub the attempt and treat it as a launch rehearsal, given the weather was expected to remain unfavorable throughout the launch window.
The next Starship launch attempt by SpaceX is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. (2130 GMT).
Elon Musk revealed on X overnight that a liquid oxygen leak at the Starship launchpad had halted Sundayโs launch attempt, but said SpaceX would try again on Monday. Later that day, Musk made a brief appearance on SpaceXโs live stream to talk about Starshipโs design and its goal of carrying humans to Mars.
This year, the development of SpaceXโs next-generation rocketโcrucial to both the companyโs strong launch operations and Muskโs ambition to send humans to Marsโhas encountered multiple setbacks.
NASA plans to use the rocket by 2027 to carry astronauts for its first crewed moon landing since the Apollo missions.
SpaceXโs Starlink satellite internet service, a key revenue driver, depends heavily on Starshipโs success. Musk plans to use Starship to deploy larger groups of Starlink satellites, which until now have been launched into orbit by SpaceXโs reliable Falcon 9 rocket.

This approach contrasts sharply with SpaceXโs competitors like Jeff Bezosโ Blue Origin, whose New Glenn rocket entered service in January after years of extensive ground testing and development. Similarly, United Launch Allianceโs new Vulcan rocket, backed by Boeing and Lockheed Martin, followed a comparable path before its debut in 2024.
SpaceXโs method results in early flight test failures of Starship, which hinder the company from collecting crucial technical data required to improve the rocketโs design.
Despite this, SpaceXโprojected by Musk to generate approximately $15.5 billion in revenue this yearโhas rapidly manufactured new Starships for test flights at Starbase, a large and fast-expanding rocket industrial site. In May, local voters, many of whom work for SpaceX, officially established the area as a municipality.
Starship’s challenges underscore the technical complexity of this latest version. It introduces major upgrades over earlier models, including increased thrust, a tougher heat shield, and stronger steering flaps that play a key role in guiding the spacecraft during atmospheric reentryโcrucial components of the reusable design Musk has long promoted.
Before Starship can begin the regular missions Musk envisions, SpaceX must tackle a long list of development tasks. The team needs to prove it can achieve safe reentry from space, deploy payloads successfully in orbit, and master complex in-space refuelingโa critical capability for the planned NASA moon missions.
Once in space, Starship will attempt to deploy mock Starlink satellites and restart an engine during its suborbital journey around Earth. During reentry over the Indian Ocean, the spacecraft will actively test its exterior steering flaps and a range of experimental heat shield tiles while facing intense heat and friction.
