There is no Shafali Verma on the India squad for the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.

The BCCI has released the India team for the Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, and Shafali Verma has been excluded.

India announced its Women’s World Cup squad on Tuesday, naming Harmanpreet Kaur as captain and Smriti Mandhana as vice-captain. In a surprising move, Shafali Verma — known for her explosive white-ball performances — was excluded from the 15-player lineup.

Set to take place in India, the 2025 edition of the tournament offers Harmanpreet and her squad a prime chance to deliver something memorable for the home crowd. The event kicks off on September 30, with India facing Sri Lanka in their opening match.

India continue their hunt for a maiden Women’s World Cup title. Their closest attempt came in 2017, when Mithali Raj led the team to the final at Lord’s, but they lost to England in a nail-biting finish. Along with naming the World Cup squad, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and chief selector Neetu David also announced the team for the upcoming Australia series.

What’s the reason behind Shafali Verma’s omission?

Shafali, the aggressive opener, last played a Women’s One-Day International for India in October 2024. Her inconsistent performances led the selectors to drop her from the squad. Although Neetu David didn’t explain the decision in detail, she stressed that Shafali still has a chance to fight her way back into the team.

“She’s currently representing India A in Australia and remains very much within our setup,” David said. “We’re closely monitoring her progress. The more game time she gets, the more experience she’ll build for the future.”

“Our team performed well in England, and we’ve been developing this squad for quite some time,” she said. “We believe this is the strongest lineup, so we don’t want to make changes right before the World Cup. We simply want Shafali to continue playing and gaining valuable experience.”
