ChatGPT Embraces India with Localized Pricing and Language Support

OpenAI has officially begun a pilot program to introduce local pricing for its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in India. This is a significant move that allows users to subscribe to paid plans in Indian Rupees (INR) for the first time. The decision to localize pricing reflects India’s growing importance as a key market for OpenAI, which CEO Sam Altman has identified as the company’s second-largest and fastest-growing market after the US. The move aims to simplify payments and make the platform more accessible to India’s vast and rapidly expanding user base.

Under the new pricing structure, the ChatGPT Plus plan is now available for โ‚น1,999 per month, which includes GST. The higher-tier Pro plan is priced at โ‚น19,900 per month, while the Team plan for businesses costs โ‚น2,099 per seat per month. Previously, Indian users had to pay in US dollars, which, while a similar amount, was a barrier for many due to exchange rate fluctuations and complex international payment processes. The new INR pricing brings a much-needed level of predictability and ease of payment for users across the country.

This localized pricing strategy is a direct response to a key demand raised by Indian startup founders and developers during Sam Altman’s visit to India in early 2025. They had pointed out that dollar-based pricing was a major hurdle to wider adoption of the platform. The timing of this rollout is also strategic, coming shortly after the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI’s latest and most advanced model. GPT-5 offers enhanced performance in 12 Indian languages, making the platform even more relevant and useful for the local market.

There is also a possibility of an even more affordable plan on the horizon. Reports suggest that OpenAI may introduce a budget-friendly tier called “ChatGPT Go,” potentially priced at around โ‚น399 per month. This tier would be targeted at casual users, students, and first-time subscribers, further broadening the platform’s reach. By making its advanced AI tools more accessible and affordable, OpenAI is positioning itself to deepen its footprint in the Indian market and cement its leadership in the global AI landscape.
