Macron-Modi Summit 2026: Big Rafale Deal, AI Push and India-France Trade Expansion in Focus

Mumbai, India—French President Emmanuel Macron began a three-day official visit to Mumbai on February 17, 2026, with a focus on strengthening commercial ties with India, defense cooperation, and artificial intelligence. The visit marks a major turning point in the evolution of bilateral ties as President Macron prepares to meet with Narendra Modi later today.

Rafale Deal and Defence Cooperation in Focus

The focus of the negotiations is the potential multibillion-dollar purchase between the two nations for Rafale combat planes. India is reportedly moving forward with plans to purchase 114 Rafale aircraft as part of the “Make in India” initiative, which combines local manufacturing with timely deliveries. It’s possible that the contract is worth above ₹3 lakh crore. In light of growing regional security challenges, this procurement aims to strengthen India’s aviation capability.

The Mumbai discussions are also expected to cover broader defense cooperation, including industrial cooperation, strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific region, and updates to cooperative programs. Both presidents are expected to evaluate the state of the India-France defense plan that was previously agreed upon.

AI Partnership Takes Centre Stage

From February 20 till President Macron’s arrival, India will hold the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi. The first global AI summit held in the Global South, AI Action, was co-chaired by France and India in Paris in 2025 and builds on their earlier partnership.

It is expected that the two leaders would discuss startup partnerships, ethical AI standards, technological advancement, and collaboration in AI research. The program also includes talks about improving cooperation in the important mineral and high-tech industries.

Trade, Innovation and Bilateral Agreements

Along with defense and technology, trade and commerce are the key pillars of the Mumbai agenda. Mr. Modi and President Macron will jointly start the India-France Year of Innovation 2026 with the aim of fostering closer ties between business executives, researchers, and entrepreneurs from both countries.

Officials anticipate signing almost a dozen Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in a range of fields, including trade, healthcare, vocational training, and defense, following bilateral sessions at Lok Bhavan this afternoon.

Global and Strategic Dialogue

Additionally, the conference will give New Delhi and Paris a forum to discuss regional and global issues, ranging from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine to Indo-Pacific developments. Experts view the engagement as an expansion of the long-standing strategic alliance under the Horizon 2047 framework, which seeks to deepen cooperation through India’s centenary year.
