New Probe into Bangladesh Elections Amid Allegations of Voter Suppression

July 30-Kolkata, India: The interim government led by current Bangladesh Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus has formed a five-member group to look into the manipulation allegations in national elections held under the former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League in 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections despite a stepped campaign against the political opponents in the nation.

The new commitee panel will therefore replace the previous formed commitee.

Cabinet Division on the Allegations

According to information released by the Cabinet Division of Bangladesh on Tuesday, the commission will continue to examine and investigate allegations of flaws in the national elections and has suggested making changes to ensure “credible and participatory polls” in the future.

The information also highlighted that the contested elections were also the subject of “widespread criticisms both at home and abroad” due to the alleged breaches of constitutional duties, especially the need to rule the government through the elected representatives.

The authorities have tasked the commission with identifying and taking practical measures to reduce these worries and protect the integrity of the upcoming elections.

The commission is led by retired High Court Justice Shamim Hassain, who will be the committee’s main head. The committee will also retain some of the old committee members, such as Election specialist Dr. Md. Abdul Alim, former Additional Secretary Shamim Al Mamun, Associate Professor Kazi Mahfuzul Haque Supan of Dhaka University’s law faculty, and Advocate Barrister Tajrian Akram Hossain of the Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Court.

The deadline to support the report has been extended to one month i.e. from September 30 to October 31.

The Crackdown of Political Conflict in Bangladesh

On the other hand, people have raised questions concerning the democratic rights in Bangladesh. In the month of May, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) already warned the newly formed interim government under Yunus and said that the recent legislative actions run the risk of compromising fundamental rights.

The organisation also criticised Muhammad Yunus’s government for silencing and suppressing the voices of the supporters of Sheikh Hasina’s deposed Awami League party. The interim govt under Yunus obstructed a ‘permanent’ ban on Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League under the controversial Anti-Terrorism Act in the month of May.

The Deputy Asia Director of HRW, Meenakshi Ganguly highlighted on this issue and stated that “Sheikh Hasina’s government abused legal powers to silence political opponents, but using similar methods against the supporters of her Awami League party would also violate those same fundamental freedoms.”

The US-based rights group also expresses concern that the actions of the interim government could further weaken Bangladesh’s democratic values.
