India has requested Bangladesh to verify the nationality of 2,369 individuals suspected of residing illegally within Indian territory. The move aims to strengthen border control and enhance bilateral cooperation on migration issues.

Unauthorized migrant screening topped India’s diplomatic agenda during recent talks with Bangladesh. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), these 2,369 individuals completed jail terms but await deportation. Their nationality must first be confirmed by Bangladesh.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized the urgency. He said, “We want Bangladesh to verify these names quickly so deportation can proceed smoothly.” The list includes individuals flagged by immigration authorities across several Indian states.

Illegal migrant verification: Long-standing Cases Unresolved Since 2020

India compiled this list over several years. Many cases date back to 2020. Despite completing legal sentences, these individuals remain in India due to unverified status. Consequently, government officials face pressure to expedite their removal.

The MEA continues to follow up with Dhaka. Authorities are also coordinating with state governments to track each person’s location.

Bilateral Talks Focus on Cooperation

India and Bangladesh have shared strong cooperation on migration control. Previous efforts led to the return of hundreds of illegal residents. However, this new list highlights the need for faster coordination.

During high-level meetings, both sides agreed to maintain communication. Bangladesh officials promised to review the list promptly.

Unauthorized migrant screening comes as India strengthens border security. Officials are increasing surveillance along sensitive routes. Security agencies are using new digital systems to track undocumented entries.

Home Ministry sources confirmed that new fencing projects along the border are also underway. Additionally, biometric verification tools are being introduced at major checkpoints.
