Russia declares a surprise 3-day ceasefire in Ukraine

Russian President Putin called in for a surprise ceasefire from May 8-10 in the latest updates for the Russia-Ukraine war. Is to mark the celebrations of WW2 Victory Day of Nazi Germany’s defeat.

The decision comes along as U.S. President Trump is on the sidelines deciding whether a deal to bring an end to the 3-year-long war is in the books or not. Citing “humanitarian grounds”, the ceasefire will commence from May 8th, midnight, and is said to continue till the 10th of the same month.

Push from Trump’s administration

The notification for ceasefire was issued in lieu of Trump being in the talks to garner a deal. Trump has been pushing to barter a deal to end the conflict going on for more than 3 years now.

In other news, the American president also shared that the deal settlement was coming to a “close” the previous Friday. While the president is in talks about the peace deal, he also cited concerns over Russia in the matter. This comes from the fact that the country has been attempting strikes on Ukrainian civilians.  

Even right before the news of the sudden ceasefire was announced, there was a long-range strike session carried out by both of the countries. Russia estimated that they had recently brought down at least 119 of the drones shared by Ukraine.

American military assistance has been vital to Ukraine’s war effort, and if the Trump administration abandons efforts to bring the conflict to a close, more assistance may be in jeopardy.

U.S. Secretary says upcoming weeks crucial

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also came forth with some statement. During his interview on ‘Meet the Press’ by NBC, he shares that the up-and-coming week is going to be extremely crucial in the matter. The importance mainly lies in the system of the army. The debate of whether Washington should keep on investing in providing the public with ‘diplomatic resources’ is another key argument of the talk.

Any deal such as territorial rights is unacceptable to Ukraine. President Zelenskyy has charged Russia with violating “2,000” of earlier truces. In order for easier actual talks on peace, he has demanded that the current truce be prolonged to 30 days.
