Sacred Silence: Orthodox Easter Truce Begins

The recent decision by Russian and Ukrainian forces to declare a temporary ceasefire during Orthodox Easter celebrations constitutes a unique break from the ongoing war, which has shaped the international geopolitical environment for four years now. According to reports, the ceasefire will commence before the actual start of the Easter celebrations, thus giving both sides 32 hours of peace before returning to combat operations around fortified lines. Such a development is the culmination of months-long diplomatic efforts, leading to a coordinated lull that gives both countries’ largely Orthodox communities a chance to celebrate their holiest day. For the combatants entrenched in the east and south, the cessation of fire affords an important mental break, allowing for the provision of necessary humanitarian assistance and local prisoner exchange. Nonetheless, military officers have issued strict warnings, cautioning that troops may counterattack should there be any violation of the ceasefire terms.

Spiritual Heritage in Light of Attrition:

With orthodox Pascha, both countries can have their usual midnight mass services and processions in the middle of night with candles, which would otherwise not have been possible owing to the danger of ongoing shelling.
