Massive Explosion at Iran’s Largest Port Kills 4, Injures 500

A massive explosion at Iran’s largest commercial port on Saturday, killed at least four people and injured more than 500. The blast, linked to missile fuel chemicals, struck Shahid Rajaee Port in Hormozgan province. The disaster comes amid sensitive US-Iran nuclear talks, again raising regional tensions.

Chemicals Behind the Deadly Blast

A massive explosion at Iran erupted in the port’s chemical storage area. Thick black smoke poured into the sky as flames engulfed multiple containers.

“The cause of the explosion was the chemicals inside the containers,” said Hossein Zafari, spokesperson for Iran’s crisis management organization.

Iranian state TV added that “negligence in handling flammable materials was a contributing factor.”

According to the private security firm Ambrey, the chemicals included “sodium perchlorate rocket fuel” imported from China. Ambrey linked the shipment to efforts to replenish Iran’s missile stockpiles depleted during recent conflicts with Israel.

Port Infrastructure Severely Damaged

The shockwave shattered windows and damaged buildings up to 50 kilometers away. Fars news agency reported, “The shockwave was so strong that most of the port buildings were severely damaged.”

Videos on social media showed charred containers and black smoke billowing over the port.

Esmaeil Malekizadeh, a regional port official, confirmed, “We are extinguishing the fire and evacuating injured people.”

No Immediate Blame Assigned

Iran has not yet accused any external actor of involvement despite rising tensions. An Israeli official told Channel 12 news that Israel had “no involvement” in the explosion.

Previously, in 2020, Shahid Rajaee Port suffered a cyberattack blamed on Israel. However, this time, both Iran and Israel are staying silent.

Port Authorities Scramble to Control Damage

Efforts to control the fire are ongoing. Trucks and nearby cargo have been evacuated. Meanwhile, First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref ordered a full investigation into the incident.

Mehrdad Hassanzadeh, head of Hormozgan’s crisis management authority, explained, “The explosion of several containers stored in the wharf area caused this incident.”

The state-owned National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company quickly clarified, “The explosion at Shahid Rajaee Port has no connection to refineries, fuel tanks, or oil pipelines.”

Talks with the US Add to Tensions

The explosion coincides with critical nuclear negotiations between Iran and the US in Oman. President Donald Trump commented on the ongoing talks, saying, “If we don’t make a deal, I’ll be leading the pack” regarding possible military action.

Trump also revealed he preferred diplomacy over conflict but warned that “we may go in very willingly” if talks fail.

A Deadly Reminder

The Shahid Rajaee disaster echoes the 2020 Beirut port blast, which killed over 200 people after ammonium nitrate ignited. Many now question why Iran failed to move hazardous materials away from the port after such a lesson.

For now, Iran mourns its dead, treats its wounded, and investigates one of its worst industrial disasters in years.
