Kim Jong Unveils New Warship, Blames U.S. for Rising Tensions
North Korea Launches New Multipurpose Warship

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un unveiled a new 5,000-ton naval destroyer on Friday at a launching ceremony held at the western port of Nampo, according to North Korea’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). He described the warship as a critical step toward expanding the operational range and preemptive strike power of North Korea’s nuclear-armed forces.
Kim emphasized that this destroyer, dubbed “multipurpose” by state media, is equipped to handle anti-air, anti-naval, and nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles. He stated that the vessel would officially join the navy early next year and begin active service.
Arms Buildup Framed as Response to U.S. Threats
Kim once again blamed the United States and its allies, particularly South Korea, for escalating regional tensions.
“The ongoing expansion of joint military exercises and updated nuclear deterrence strategies by the U.S. and South Korea are preparations for war,” Kim said, vowing to “respond decisively” to the rising geopolitical crisis.
He framed North Korea’s military advancements, including this destroyer, as necessary countermeasures to perceived U.S. hostility.
Next Target: Nuclear-Powered Submarine
Kim also announced that acquiring a nuclear-powered submarine remains his next major goal for strengthening North Korea’s navy. He hinted that progress on this project would follow soon, echoing ambitions first laid out during a 2021 political conference, where he vowed to develop advanced weapons systems in response to “growing U.S.-led threats.”
Besides nuclear submarines, Kim’s 2021 weapons wish list included solid-fuel ICBMs, hypersonic weapons, spy satellites, and multi-warhead missiles. Since then, North Korea has conducted multiple tests in pursuit of these technologies.
Skepticism Over North Korea’s Capabilities
Despite Kim’s bold announcements, defense experts remain skeptical. Some analysts doubt whether North Korea, given its economic hardships and isolation, can genuinely develop sophisticated military platforms like nuclear-powered submarines without external help.
South Korea’s military has so far declined to comment on North Korea’s new warship claims.
Strengthening Ties with Russia Amid Isolation
Meanwhile, Kim’s foreign policy strategy has shifted notably toward closer ties with Russia. As Western sanctions squeeze North Korea, Pyongyang has provided weapons and personnel to assist Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
In return, South Korean intelligence agencies worry that North Korea could receive economic aid and advanced technology to bolster its military capabilities.
While former U.S. President Donald Trump recently said he would reach out again to revive diplomacy with Kim, the North has not responded. Previous talks collapsed during Trump’s first term after disagreements over sanctions and denuclearization steps.
As regional tensions escalate, Kim’s unveiling of new military hardware underscores a broader strategy of deterrence, survival, and confrontation with the West.
