ECI CRACKDOWN: TMC LEADERS ARRESTED FOR VOTER INTIMIDATION AS BJP HAILS ‘END OF MUSCLE POWER

The Election Commission has signaled a zero-tolerance policy toward voter threats, ordering the immediate arrest of local leaders found intimidating opponents

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified its “Steel Shield” strategy in West Bengal. It has ordered the arrest of several high-ranking local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders for voter intimidation. On Saturday, April 4, the West Bengal Police arrested Hafijul Molla Pradhan, the TMC chief of Deuli-I Gram Panchayat in South 24 Parganas, following ECI instructions. Pradhan was allegedly recorded on video threatening that “the steamroller will run” against opposition supporters after the results are announced. This followed a similar arrest in Murshidabad earlier this week, indicating a shift by the Commission to address delays and take action against “local strongmen” trying to manipulate the electorate of 7.08 crore.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) views these arrests as proof of their longstanding claims about a broken law-and-order situation in the state. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the move, stating that the ECI’s “unblinking eye” is finally confronting the TMC’s established culture of fear. According to BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya, these arrests show that the deployment of over 2,000 CAPF companies is backed by judicial and administrative support. The party argues that the ECI’s tough approach is vital for a “clinical” and violence-free polling process, especially in sensitive areas like Canning and Basirhat, where reports of intimidation have historically increased.

In response, the Trinamool Congress has labeled the arrests as “politically motivated harassment” from New Delhi. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a second letter to the Chief Election Commissioner this week, accusing the Commission of acting as an “extended arm of the BJP.” TMC leaders argue that while their workers are being arrested for “mere speeches,” no actions have been taken against BJP agents who are reportedly inundating the CEO office with thousands of “fraudulent” Form 6 applications to include non-residents in the state’s voter list. As the state approaches the first phase of polling on April 23, the battle for “Voter Freedom” has become a clash between the EC’s digital and physical surveillance and the TMC’s narrative of “central overreach.”
