Rahul Gandhi Calls Emergency Meeting After Pahalgam Attack

In a swift response to the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed at least 26 lives, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has cut short his visit to the United States. He will be arriving in New Delhi on Thursday to attend an emergency meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC). This emergency meeting has been convened to discuss the aftermath of the attack and formulate the party’s stance.
CWC Emergency Meeting Called in Light of Pahalgam Attack
The Congress Working Committee, the party’s highest decision-making body, has scheduled an emergency meeting at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 24, 2025. The meeting will take place at the Congress headquarters on Akbar Road in New Delhi. The party is expected to address the gravity of the situation and the terror attack’s implications for national security.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh confirmed that Rahul Gandhi would be present in person at the meeting, which reflects the party’s serious approach to the current crisis. Gandhi, who had arrived in the United States on Saturday, decided to return early in light of the tragedy.
Solidarity and Support for Victims
Ahead of the CWC meeting, Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal reached Srinagar to pay tribute to the victims. Speaking in Srinagar, he emphasized the need for unity in the face of violence and terror. โWe must stand united, not only in mourning but also in our unflinching resolve against violence and terror,โ Venugopal said.
Rahul Gandhi had previously spoken with key officials. This included Home Minister Amit Shah, Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, and Congress J&K president Tariq Karra. He sought updates on the situation. Gandhi expressed his condolences and reaffirmed the partyโs commitment to securing justice for the victims and their families.
A Deadly Attack on Tourists
The attack on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, is one of the deadliest to strike Jammu and Kashmir in recent years. Terrorists, believed to be linked to the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba, opened fire on a group of tourists in the Baisaran Meadows of Pahalgam. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the assault.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, dressed in military fatigues, fired indiscriminately at tourists enjoying the scenic beauty of the area. The victims, including several foreign tourists, were targeted while riding horses in the picturesque meadow. At least 26 people were killed, and many others were injured in the brutal attack.
Political Fallout and National Response
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation, and political leaders across the spectrum have called for stronger measures to ensure the safety of citizens and tourists in the region. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in response to the attack, has vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice and strengthen security in the region.
The Congress partyโs emergency meeting reflects its concern about the safety of civilians and the need for effective policy responses to combat terrorism. With elections approaching, national security is becoming an increasingly pivotal issue, and the Pahalgam terror attack has only heightened tensions.
Moving Forward
As the nation grapples with the tragedy, political leaders like Rahul Gandhi aim to strengthen the fight against terrorism. The CWC meeting will focus on strategies to counter militancy and enhance security in Kashmir.
Rahul Gandhiโs quick return to New Delhi reflects urgency, while the attack’s broader geopolitical and security impacts will shape India’s future policy and diplomatic responses.
